Things I own | Minimalist Possessions List

Owning stuff will not make you a non-minimalist!

Being able to declutter your life from the things you don’t need, will make you a good minimalist.

Speaking for me, I don’t consider myself a minimalist, but just a simple person that doesn’t like the mess and superfluous things.

For me is very easy to declutter myself and I am proud of the things I own. Click To Tweet

Some of them are very expensive, for the kind of object that they are, and here I am going to reveal all I own.

What Other Minimalists On Planet Earth Own

In this first paragraph, I am going to list some of the most famous minimalist’s possessions articles, so that we can compare them with mines.

As a sneak peek I am going to tell you that for me it’s pretty different, I own what I own because I want to own it and I don’t want to get rid of stuff I need.

So here are some articles you can read:

I am not sure that this is for real all they have, but for me, the things I own have a close relationship with me.

I need them, and I have spent time with myself trying to understand what the word ‘need really means for me.

I don’t like a lot to count the things I own. Because counting, will give too much weight to the situation and this is not a part of simple living.

I am living alone at the moment and I am moving away from here soon. What I have here where I am now, are items I really need, and probably, I will keep them for me until they work.

So now, I am going to talk about the few most important things I own.

My Few Necessary And Expensive Things I Own.

I own these things because my body needs them very bad, and these things are making my life easier.
Some of them might seem stupid for you, but for me, these are a few of the things I really need to own in order to have a good life.
This is my minimalist possessions list, of the things I really need.
These are the things that I will try to keep until they work, hopefully forever or something close to forever.
I know that if one of these things will break, I will need to get another one. These are my minimalist vices.
  • My car

I have a 10 years old car with a lot of miles, I might need to get a new one soon, but until it works I will keep it.

I need to own a car because I need to explore any corner of this world to feel good. It is fueled with LPG, it is cheaper and ecologic.

  • My Mac Computers And Time Capsule

I have two Mac laptops! I like to have them both turned on when I work. I have got my MacBook PRO in 2016 for free, it was broken and I fixed it.

There was a period of my life where I was putting ads all over classifieds websites saying ‘I buy broken apple stuff‘.

I have fixed and resold many iPhones and computers.

I always upgrade my computers RAM and SSD with crucial.com, you can get the best one for your computer for cheap with them.

I have 16GB of RAM on my MacBook PRO and 8GB on my older Mac. The other MacBook is from 2009 and still, I can use it for a lot of things.

I have also a 3TB Time Capsule to backup and store all my stuff. I like it because it never breaks and it works wirelessly.

This is my minimalist computer setup!

  • My iPhone

I have an iPhone SE 64 GB, I like that is small and so powerful and it takes great pictures. I have it for 3 years and it’s still new.

  • My Pillow

I am struggling with sleep, and what helps me a lot is having a nice pillow. I have a visco-vegetal polyurethane foam with memory based on castor oil 45cm x 70cm pillow. I have paid $180 for it but it’s worth it. I can not sleep with anything else.

  • Custom Earplugs

I have custom fit earplugs, they only fit my ears and I had to go make the molds to make them. I can’t sleep with any noise and these things are absolutely amazing.

It’s like not having earplugs and they are blocking any sound. They usually last 7-8 years, depending on how fast you grow. I have paid $160 for them.

  • $250 ToothBrush

I have a very expensive toothbrush, I think that teeth are very important, and I want to take care of them.

I bought this kind of toothbrush because with the hand brushing I was seriously damaging my gums. I was pushing too hard.

This toothbrush stops if I push too hard. I have saved a lot of money with dentists with this investment. I have no cavities for probably 10 years.

  • Hair Trimmer

I have a rather good hair trimmer, probably 7 years old. I cut my hair my self for more than 15 years. If you put an average cut cost of $20 once a month (20*12Months)*15years = $3600 saved.

I have basically bought my 10 years old second hand car with the money saved from haircuts.

  • Samsonite Rigid Luggage

I have two samsonite oyster rigid luggage. I love them because are small, indestructible and they fit a lot of stuff. I can press all of my clothes and blankets in them.

I did not do it on purpose but the ones above are exactly 10 things. So I could have called it the 10 most important things I own.

Other Things I Own But Less Necessary Than The Ones Above

So the ones above are the material things I really need. Together with my survivals, I need these things.

Let’s go forward with my minimalist possessions list.

Here is a more compact list of other things I own. I use them all the time but I would be able to live without them or with another version of them. Except for food.

I love not having stuff around me because like this I can experience complete #freedom. Click To Tweet

I can pack all my crap and go somewhere else within a few hours. Also, I don’t need to clean all these items and space around me looks very tidy.

  • Clothes

I have clothes that are like 10 years old and still working well. I don’t buy some clothes probably for 8 years.

I bought 10 pairs of shoes like 8 years ago because I have found a deal. Usually, I am consuming 1 pair of shoes a year.

So now I still have:

  • 3 pairs of shoes I guess, still, new waiting to be worn.
  • I have 20 pairs of underwear and 20 pairs of socks.
  •  5 jeans and  5 sweaters and 1 winter jacket.

Items total count: 3 +20 + 20 + 5 + 5 + 1 = 54  items

  • Sleep

  • 1 king size bed. (I am gonna sell it if I move)
  • 1 pair of bed sheets.
  • 1 heavy winter blanket
  • 1 sleeping bag.

Items total count: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4 items.

The pillow and the earplugs are counted in the list of necessary things above.

  • Eat

Food, this is varying all the time, I always have the fridge full of food. I will group food as one single item, but in reality, it is a lot of items. I eat a lot.

Items total count: 1 = 1 item (a lot of food)

I have:

  • 4 pans for cooking. (expensive ones)
  • 4 plates, 2 cups, 2 forks, 2 knives, 2 spoons.
  • 1 fridge.(I will sell it if I move).

Items total count::  4 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 +1  = 17 items

  • Hygiene

  • Razor. ( a good one ).
  • Hair dryer. (I get sick if I don’t dry my hair).
  • Scissors. (To cut my hair and nails.)
  • Comb.
  • 2 towels.

Items total count: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2  = 6 items.

  • Misc. Items

  • 1 office desk. (I will sell it if I move)
  • 1 wallet. (I have a nice Italian leather wallet to keep my credit cards and cash, 20 years old)
  • 1 apple watch (it helps me with my workouts and to see how much I sleep at night.)
  • 1 set of keys (car, house, lock).
  • 2 locks. (to lock my stuff when I travel and many other uses)
  • 1 cool backpack with laptop case in it.
  • 1 Toolbox full of DIY tools. (I like to fix everything, there are many tools in it, I will group it into one item).
  • 2 kneeling chairs. (I can sit only on these things, I recommend to get some too. I will sell them if I move)
  • 2 lamps. (I will sell them if I move)
  • 1 acoustic guitar.
  • 4 wifi controlled wall plugs.  (I can turn off the wifi and my devices with my phone)
  • 2 power sockets.
  • 2 travel adaptors.
  • 1 special grocery bag. (It is a bag that holds over 250 pounds and it stretches a lot)
  • 1 food scale. (to measure the food I put in my body).
  • 1 eye mask for sleeping where the room is not completely dark.
  • 1 mirror. ( I will sell it when I move)
  • 1 car phone holder.
  • 1 car with 2 holes phone charger.
  • (1) internet connection. (I pay for it. but I don’t technically own it),
  • (1) house I rent (so I don’t own it).

total count: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 +2 +2 +1 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1+ (1) + (1) = 27 (29) items

I have 2 chairs and 2 plates and 2 cups because I was living with my girlfriend for the past 4 years. We have just broken up a month ago, I might get rid of the secondary things I have soon.

I love the wifi controlled wall plugs because I can turn off all my devices with my phone.

I have connected my lamps and computers and wifi box and the time capsule to the sockets. When I turn off the wifi plugs all is off.

I don’t like to sleep with wifi on and flashing lights.

Total Sum Of The First Minimalist List And The Second Minimalist List

So my total number of things I own at the moment from the totally necessary ones and the other ones is:

TOTAL THINGS I OWN SUM: 10 + 54 + 4 + 1 + 17 + 6 + 27 = 119 Items.

I might sell a lot of them when I move and it’s written between the parenthesis.

Things That I Might Or Will Sell When I Am Moving Away.

There are things I own that can be cumbersome to move, the kneeling chairs, plates, bed, pans, desk, lamps.

What I usually do is to buy these things second hand and then resell them when it’s time to leave. I don’t want to pay money to move a chair or a bed.

I know I need these things but I don’t waste any money because I sell them and buy again wherever I go.

I always travel in my car, so I have plenty of space to fit all the rest I have there. Even though it is not a lot, it takes all my car space.

Luggage, guitar, computers, blankets, etc.. take space! I have no idea how regular people do it with all the stuff they own.

It is already hard for me with few the things I own.

Learn to say no, read my article here.

Conclusions

I am not keeping a list of things I own, I just look around me and try to figure out what I really need and what I don’t.

After a little of work, I came out with a minimalist possessions list of 119 items.

As you could see with my items list, I struggle with sleep. So for me is important to have a good pillow and custom earplugs. I also own an Apple watch to monitor my sleep and keep track of my calisthenics activities.

I try to do calisthenics 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at least for a few hours.

cat sleeping on the pillow

I have separated the item list into two main parts:

  • The first part is the stuff I really need and if will break or I will not have it anymore, I will need to buy.
  • The second part of the list is stuff I need in order to survive, like clothes and food and some furniture etc..

I can probably find a way to live without these things except for food. But to live in a civilized world I might need them and I do have them.
